Winding along the foot of Powell Mountain is the New River – one of the oldest rivers on the continent, and a major waterway and source of beauty and recreation in West Virginia. The New River flows northward from North Carolina and eventually turns into raging whitewater in Fayette County that attracts thrill seekers from all over the globe.

This wondrous river is a mere 40 minute hike and 1000’ vertical feet down the mountain from the property and can be accessed on-trail or off-trail. Shanklin’s Ferry – a New River campground – is a short 20 minute drive “around the block” and provides opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming, hiking and rock climbing.

There are also multiple points of access nearby to the Appalachian Trail, with the closest only 15 minutes away in the town of Lindside.

Snowshoe Mountain, the largest ski resort in the Mid-Atlantic, is under an hour drive, as are Bluestone State Park, Pipestem State Park Resort, and the 2000 acre Bluestone Lake, which is fed by the New River and the Greenbrier River. The 17,000 acre Bluestone Wildlife Management Area provides camping, boating and recreational opportunities along an extended stretch of the river. World-class whitewater rafting on the New River and Gauley River, and the 80,000 acre New River Gorge National Park are within a 90 minute drive to the north, as is the world-renowned Greenbrier Resort with four star accommodations, subterranean casino, and host of the PGA tour, the “Greenbrier Classic.”
